LADY JEWELS ~ WHY THEY SHINE SO BRIGHT
“If I knew then what I know now, oh how my life would have been different, maybe even better.” But God!” Shay Thompson often thought about how she grew up and some of the decisions she made as a young adult. Did she know any better? Maybe, maybe not. I’m sure she didn’t decide to do anything knowing it would bring her heartache and pain. Did she know who she was or even her worth? Most likely not. We grow up and live life the way we think it’s supposed to be, not knowing what lies ahead or what God has in store for us.
Although we would like to go back and change some of things that we have done, we can’t. So what can we do? We learn and grow and pass it forward, in hopes that we touch a life and save
someone from some of the bad decisions that we made. That is exactly what Shay did! She began to pray and talk to God, yearning to know what her purpose is. Why did I go through those things? How can I show our young ladies a different route than the one I took? Because of her faith in God, she realized that he had turned her bad into good. God let her know her purpose was to be the connection to our youth and show them how to live Christ like.
This was the beginning of Lady Jewels. In 2011 Shay expressed her thoughts and ideas to Aisha Daniels whom she calls her right hand. She wanted to “take back what the devil thinks he stole from us.” She wanted to save our youth from issues that
the enemy uses to take them out, low self-esteem, depression, sexual assault, drugs and alcohol, bullying and teen pregnancy. She needed others to share this vision with and travel a road of purpose alongside her restoring the fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control). She wanted those who participated to see the beauty in the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly and how enriching and fulfilling it will be.
Lady Jewels needed more than a vision and a prayer to make it, they needed financial backing. For two years Shay and the other leaders, Aisha, Kim and Tumega, operated out of her
home. Shay’s father Frost saw the sacrifices his daughter was making and was proud. He wanted to help and he did. He is now president of Lady Jewels and has become the organizations main source of financing. He is currently seeking additional resources via grants and other funding sources. Since becoming president, Mr. Frost has secured an office space Lady Jewels can call home. He has opened doors to opportunities that will help the organization grow to a national level. Shay says “he’s not only my father, he’s my rock. Everything he does, he does it from the heart! He is the backbone of Lady Jewels.”
Shay attributes the success of Lady Jewels to the other leaders believing in the vision that God gave her. These ladies aren’t
just Lady Jewels’ leaders, they are her sisters, her friend. She says “Aisha was there from the beginning. When I get discouraged, you gave me faith. Where we lacked, you strengthened. She is the protector, she makes sure Lady Jewels will not be misrepresented. She carries many burdens but has yet to leave my side. I love you beyond your understanding and without you there would be no Lady Jewels.”
Over all LJ is making an impact on these young ladies and it shows. We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Lady Jewels was put together according to His word. Each and every one that has been or is a part of Lady Jewels stands on 1Peter 4:1 God has given each of us some special abilities, be sure to use them to help each other.
